Salisbury Steaks

My husband loves those Banquet Salisbury Steak meals. (Does that tell you anything about his pallet?) Fortunately, we have yet to have those meals in our freezer since we've been together. But in order for me to remove those dollar meals from his weekly menu, I had to find a way to make them myself. There are a lot of ways to make Salisbury Steaks. But I had to find a way to make them taste like that good, salty, comfort-y, bad for you, meal that you shouldn't be eating. Try it out and let me know how you like it! It's a definite man pleaser :)

Ingredients

For the patties-

  • 1 pound ground beef

  • 1 egg

  • 1/4 cup crushed French's Fried Onions

  • 1/4 cup breadcrumbs

  • 1 tablespoon Ketchup

  • 1 teaspoon mustard

  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire Sauce

  • 1 tablespoon Montreal seasoning

  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder

  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

  • 1/4 teaspoon pepper

For the gravy-

  • 4 tablespoons butter, split

  • 2 tablespoons flour

  • 2 cups beef broth

  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

  • 1/4 teaspoon pepper

Directions

  1. In a large bowl, combine all of the patty ingredients. Take my advice: remove your rings and mix with your hands.

  2. Form patties with the meat mixture. You can get creative with shape and size here. I've made them big and thick, small and thin, even meatballs. But my husbands favorite is small thin ovals, about 1/2 inch thick.

  3. In a large pan (my favorite for this recipe is my 10-inch stainless steel pan) melt 2 tablespoons of butter over medium heat.

  4. Add patties to pan and walk away! Seriously, don't touch them for at least 4 minutes. The goal here is to maintain the shape and get a good brown crisp going on.

  5. After 4 minutes, flip patties with a spatula and cook for another 4 uninterrupted minutes.

  6. Remove patties from pan. It's ok if they aren't cooked all the way through yet.

  7. Melt remaining 2 tablespoons of butter to the same pan. Whisk in flour and cook for about a minute.

  8. Add beef broth and salt and pepper to the flour mix and whisk your heart out. Allow mixture to come to boil.

  9. Reduce heat to simmer.

  10. Add patties back to pan and ladle the gravy over them.

  11. Cover and simmer for 10 minutes.

  12. Remove from heat and serve.

Notes

  • If you don't have French's Fried Onions substitute with 1/4 cup of breadcrumbs.

  • If you don't have breadcrumbs crush up enough crackers to replace.

  • As always, recipes are guidelines. Make it your own!
